Glasair Super II FT N816Y
This is N816Y, my Glasair Super-II FT.
I purchased the kit
in September 1993,
and did most of the airframe construction evenings and weekends in my
garage in Columbus, Ohio from 1993 to 2001, with the exception of
about two-and-a-half years while I worked overseas in Saudi
Arabia.
In June of 2001 I moved the
airplane to Hot Springs Memorial Field (HOT)
in Arkansas in a large moving truck.
Most of my activity for the next two years was installing
systems, painting the airplane, and rebuilding the engine. It was
approved to fly by the FAA on September 5, 2003, and I flew the
first flight on September 6 (beginning a new career as
a test pilot). N816Y has a Lycoming O360-A1D 180 HP
aircraft engine and
a Hartzell constant speed prop, along with full IFR instrumentation.
It cruises at about 190 mph and has a range between refueling
of almost 1000 miles. The airplane seats two people side-by-side,
with ample luggage space behind the seats.
After completing the test flying phase, my wife Jeanette and I
made many trips in this airplane, going as far as Florida and
New Hampshire. Building and flying this airplane was
an outstanding experience! However, as more of my time and energy became
devoted to art, I found myself flying less. So I sold the airplane to
another pilot, who seems to be enjoying it as much as I did.
